Winter Solstice 2022 Ritual Potpourri

The winter solstice is the longest night of the year and the shortest day.  It signifies the first day of winter, but also ushers in longer days from tomorrow on.  Until this day, the daylight hours have been gradually waning, which will now reverse and begin to grow again.  Therefore, while it may feel like cold and dark times, the winter solstice is a time of celebration for renewal and more light here forward.

Nonetheless, the days are cold at this time and the winter solstice is a day of very little light in many parts of the northern hemisphere.  Therefore, we can celebrate the day by surrounding ourselves with warmth and symbolism of the sun, which becomes significant after the day of winter solstice when the days start to grow longer.

I have spent the entire day simmering a mix of orange, cinnamon and cloves to infuse my home with warm fresh scents. I surrounded myself with citrus because simultaneously I dried orange slices for a winter solstice potpourri.  Orange symbolizes the sun and it kindles love, divination and prosperity. Along with dried orange slices, I included in my potpourri mix cloves, cinnamon, and rosemary.  All of which are winter herbs and spices that are said to encourage attributes I am making a conscious intention towards.  Cinnamon is said to incite healing, protections, and even psychic abilities.  Cloves are also intended to fuel good luck and protection.  Rosemary signifies love and remembrance, which is a wonderful choice for winter celebrations. Rosemary is very potent and retains its fragrance even when dried and stored.
