Belief Gives Us Identity: Day 2 of Become What You Believe – 21 Day Meditation Experience with Oprah and Deepak Chopra

“Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.”

― Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

belief gives us identity

The purpose of today’s meditation is to arouse our awareness to our beliefs and examine them carefully because our beliefs form our identity. This meditation is supposed to help with clarity when it comes to our beliefs.

Today’s Message of the Day: “In today’s meditation, we learn that we are what we believe. We shape our identities around what we feel to be true about ourselves. Sometimes we don’t even clearly know what our beliefs are, because many are hidden and unconscious. Beliefs we hold about ourselves may be either mild or passionate, but they all still contribute to who we are. Our meditation today brings us greater clarity about how our beliefs form our identities, because to truly understand ourselves, we need to examine our beliefs closely in the light of our awareness.”

The CENTERING THOUGHT for today’s meditation experience was: “What I believe makes me who I am.”

The SANSKRIT MANTRA used in the meditation: So Hum (I am).

Today’s discussion and meditation was also about 20 minutes. I cannot reiterate how wonderful it is to set some time aside for myself to be alone in silence. If you need to drain out other sounds, you can always try some meditation music with earphones. This is definitely helpful for me to hold my focus. So, give yourself 10 minutes today and simply focus on the above centering thought and repeat the mantra – “So Hum”.

Today’s four journal prompts were:

  1. List the labels that apply to you, including age, gender, profession, marital status, race, and nationality.
  2. For each label, write down “positive” or “negative” as it affects your life right now.
  3. Finally, reflect on how the negative labels mirror your own beliefs, or those of your friends and family. Looking at each label, note which ones reflect who you really are. These are part of your true identity.
  4. Use this space to reflect further on your experience today.

Once again, I would love for anyone who feels comfortable to share their thoughts on these journal questions by commenting here.

May your evening be blissful and your day be energetic!
